A few weeks back I spent half a day with mountains-based death metal band Resonator. For all these shots I put a 24″ softbox on the key light and used a second flash for fill/rim.
May was a quiet month for live stuff, the only show of merit being Suicidal Tendencies at the Metro Theatre. I also went along to the Segression’s ‘Never Dead’ gig at the Annandale, but I ended up being a lighting tech for some of the night and then got talking to (and drinking with) people [...]
I’ve decided to go for a monthly roundup of gig photos this time. A digest if you will. Anyway April was a good month, most of the jobs being for BLUNT mag. Here are some of the shots…
February 19, 2011 by Jamie Funktacular This was my first gig of 2011 and it was a blast! Stayed right ’til the end for this one, because sometimes you just can’t beat disco*. *It’s true
December 5, 2010 by Jamie “What’s up Sydney??!!” ‘Pop rock’ or not, I actually really like Paramore, so I was stoked when I got asked to cover their visit to Sydney in October. The band drew a, um.. ‘youthful’ clientele to the Sydney Entertainment Centre, with, as expected, the demographic mostly comprising 14 year old demi-clones of frontlady Hayley Williams. [...]
November 24, 2010 by Jamie “IIIIIIII’ve bin workin’ hard!” This was my second time shooting The Snowdroppers, although on the previous occasion they were supporting Hell City Glamours at the Oxford Art Factory. This time it was a headline show, and they certainly drew an eclectic mix of punters! There was a great atmosphere at the Manning on this night, [...]
November 22, 2010 by Jamie This could be anywhere in the world (but it’s not, it’s in Sydney) I’ll never be able to choose a favourite band, but Torontonian post-hardcore-ers Alexisonfire are, to my surprise as much as anyone else’s, strong contenders. The band managed to sell out the UNSW Roundhouse, and that’s despite the somewhat non-transferrable Canadian subject matter [...]
November 16, 2010 by Jamie After all, synths do rule… Not long after shooting some portraits with Dreadnaught at Yarr-Fest!, I headed into the Gaelic to soak up the mini-festival for myself. Perth-based band Voyager treated the fairly sizable crowd to some rather awesome sound, combining metal, melodies, fantasy and a little bit of good humour. I really enjoyed it, [...]
November 15, 2010 by Jamie Lightning sometimes strikes twice… Metallica returned to Sydney last week and I was lucky enough to shoot their show again! Armed with a little knowledge of how things ran, I chilled out for the first song (all lasers) and got plenty of shots in the next two. Compared to last time, the atmosphere was electric. [...]
November 9, 2010 by Jamie Going Lo-Fi With all the heavy metal I shoot, it’s easy to forget how much I love punchy, solid post-blues rock. I fell in love with Nat Col and the Kings at a small festival the other month, so I was more than happy to be at the Gaelic last week to cover the band’s [...]
