Ivy Live 2009

On Friday 11th September I took some photos at Ivy Live, a weekend long music festival in Ivybridge that attracted a crowd of over 3,000.

Seven bands were playing on the outdoor ‘Mount The Curb’ stage that evening:

I shot a few general pictures of the venue (amazing sunset that night by the way), but of course it was the live music that got my attention.  I had free reign in front of the stage, but I only hung around for three songs by each act since that’s the standard thing to do.  All the shots were taken with my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which I’m steadily growing to love…

First of all, check out the cool sunset sky at around 8pm-

Opening the evening were Spies.  They didn’t move around much and they were lit by shadows, so the shots weren’t particularly rock and roll.  But next up were The Dolcet Tones, with a lively frontman wearing cool sunglasses-

Then it started to get darker, prompting a beefy increase in camera ISO, but that’s ok.  Tamakai, with their fusion of drum & bass and metal, were really entertaining (thanks in part to the band member dressed like a paramedic whose job was to dance)-

In fact I bumped into Tamakai at the dodgems later on that night and managed to snap this totally ROCK! portrait-

Okay, Os Vampiros next-

And following Os Vampiros: Adventures Of, who were dressed a bit like period undertakers.  They were very good though, and played an admirable cover of Toxic by Britney Spears.  This is also a good example of how much easier it is to get an interesting photograph if the band members actually move rather than glue their mouths to the mic for the whole set-

The penultimate band was Outfit, who really got the crowd going with their ska/funk/rap/punk tunes and lyrical waxings-

Then there was some fire-

And finally to the headliners.  This was the first time I had seen The Quails live, and I wasn’t disappointed with the set.  I recognised frontman Dan Steer having seen him backstage at the recent Muse homecoming gig in Teignmouth (whom they were supporting) and later in a hotel bar with Chris Moyles and Zane Lowe.  Random times, but I digress-

So overall a jolly good knees-up.  I wish I could have been there on the Saturday too :(
